I...

My name is Maria João.

John, for family and friends

Maria, to the students.

Maria Calma, for the Ganges River Boys (Rishikesh - India).

On the way...

While working in the corporate world as a young adult and yoga practitioner, I felt compelled to make a change in my life. The existential doubt, with the spiritual connection that always existed in me, led me to emerge in the intensive practice of yoga, in psychotherapy, alternative medicine, participating in rituals, ceremonies, prayers, spiritual traditions, later deciding to enroll in a yoga teacher training.

So with the blessing received from yoga and steady, rhythmic breathing. Trainings I did and do with magnificent teachers who are an inspiration. Experiences lived in my body and mind, plus observations of basic limitations felt by students and practitioners,  I felt that the time had come to follow something in my image: combining yoga with the expressive fire of movement.

I love exploring the relationship between discipline and fun and I'm a big believer in the power of these two. Embracing intuition, I like to explore human movement, with the intention of helping people to develop fully incorporated and more fluid communication and expression in their daily lives.

I AM...

Intense but immense.

Abundant and generous in emotions, with a light and cheerful disposition.

To life (work, relationships, causes…), I give myself body and soul.

Even on bad days, I'm grateful to life, because I'm a - happy - go - lucky person :)

I believe that...

...free thoughts lead to conscientious people, most valuable resource of all.

...we are our hearts and minds, our experiences and interpretations.

...we are people, sharing what we've learned with others

...we are more than systems and theories that we subscribe to

...the human body with its ability to heal, adapt, fail, resist, renew over and over again, is something magical
